Transition

Not just for one year

The process of transferring from one setting to another, whether from Wider Opportunity whole class work to group tuition, or from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3 is one that needs to be carefully managed.

We know that music making has a positive impact on every aspect of a person’s life so it is vitally important that we have strategies in place to support this change.

Outreach programmes where musical links are made between feeder schools and the recipient school involving music are proving beneficial.

Wider Opportunities to Follow on Tuition

Wider Opportunities should be provided free of charge for pupils and usually runs for a year. After this initial involvement many young people want to continue learning in the same kind of way with their friends.

Key Stage 2 to 3

Nationally there is a significant drop in the numbers of pupils continuing to access formal music tuition once they change schools, whether it’s from Key Stage 2 to 3, or in the case of the tertiary system first to
middle to upper. Many youngsters who do stop accessing formal music lessons cite their friends and the style of provision as the major contributory factors to this decision.

Supporting transition

We can support pupils through these changes in a variety of ways:

  • If pupils are continuing after the initial year with the same instrument, similar but more advanced Music ICT materials are available encouraging individual and group learning
  • If pupils are changing to another instrument after the initial year, the Music ICT materials will be familiar
  • The opportunity to access Music ICT learning materials outside of school will have embedded good routines and placed the pupil in charge of their own learning
  • Teachers can access a library with thousands of Music ICT resources for free
  • Teachers can provide records of learning paths
  • Music ICT materials can be used to facilitate outreach events
